ºÚÁÏÉç is globally recognised for excellence in Midwifery, with the School of Nursing and Midwifery receiving a 5 rating, identifying the School as ‘well above world standard’ in Excellence in Research for Australia in 2018.
Our curriculums demonstrate innovative teaching and learning materials and our team stimulates and promotes deep understanding of concepts important to the profession of midwifery, as well as instilling life-long learning in our midwifery students. Examples are our award winning, cross disciplinary work such as the multidisciplinary Psychosocial InterProfessional Education (PIPE) team and leadership of the Mother, Family and Infant Network (MIFaM), which is one of the most successful research groups in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The MIFaM Network works collaboratively with women, families, health and community groups to research and facilitate positive pregnancy, birth, postnatal and early parenting experiences and outcomes. Several of the midwifery academics sit on peak State, National and International Committees and give advice to government/s about maternity care direction. Members of this team are also highly sought after for keynote addresses around the world as well as regularly cited in the media. In 2019 Professor Dahlen (Discipline Leader) was awarded a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) in the Queen’s birthday honours list for her significant services to midwifery. Dr Elaine Burns work led to the introduction of a breastfeeding policy for staff and students and the accreditation of ºÚÁÏÉç as a breastfeeding friendly workplace.
